Blade Runner 2049

So I finally watched Blade Runner 2049. I know, everyone has already seen it so why even bother talking about it? Well as a fan of Blade Runner I have been looking forward to this movie for a while now and finally had some time to myself to watch it.  I have some thoughts but before I get into 2049 I first wanted to talk about Blade Runner and why I like it.

in 1982 Blade Runner was released.  I was 7 years old, way to young to see it in the theaters, and would never have understood it anyway.  I did not see it until I was about 14 or 15.  It was recommended to me by my uncle who was a history teacher and had his students watch it.  I don’t remember when I watched it the first time but it did have an impact on me.

Now, I have to say that it has been at least 10 years since I have watched Blade Runner and some of my thoughts about it regarding acting and dialogue may be remembered incorrectly.  However, the themes and ideas in the film I remember quite clearly.  In Blade Runner the main themes are what does it mean to be alive, and what defines humanity.  The goal of Roy and his band of replicants was to “meet their maker” and ask the questions about their existence and why they had to die.  These themes are explored within the backdrop of a gritty and dark world with fascinating characters.  Which made the movie much more than your typical sci-fi.

That being said, the followup was…  good, but lacked some of the punch that made Blade Runner a cult classic.  The imagery, lighting, cinematography, and music was awesome.  Very beautifully shot and put together.  The storytelling was good, great actually, but did not have the same deep thought-provoking essence that I remember from Blade Runner. It seemed to be a logical continuation, however, despite its length, which is impressive, it does not do a great job of setting up what has happened over the past 30 years.  There are some indications of what has happened but it is fragmented.

**SPOILERS AHEAD***

There are also some story elements that don’t seem to make much sense, at least to me.  For instance, why would Nander Wallace, need Deckard to find the child to figure out the secret if we all thought K was the child?  It is never explained why Wallace and Luv figured out he was not the one.  Also why does he need to take him “off world” to get the answers?  Even though we are meant to think that Deckard is a replicant we still don’t know for sure, and given that it was Rachael and Deckard that were able to procreate, wouldn’t having her bones be enough to find out what the secret was?  The final question is why did it matter to Wallace in the first place?  In the movie we are treated to a scene in which Wallace goes on and on about wanting to figure this secret out so he can push further into the stars, but why would that matter if he can just “make” them anyway?

After thinking about some of these questions, I am beginning to wonder if the movie was saying more about the situation of the replicants.  Maybe the reason Wallace could not figure it out was because it was simply life finding a way to survive, and not  due to engineering.  That would mean that it was his own hubris and God complex that left him searching for how to do it. it might also explain why the underground replicant freedom fighters would want to keep it a secret.  Perhaps more of them have reproduced already meaning that they only needed to keep the secret long enough to allow the next generation to survive and assimilate into society.

The movie was good, and asked lots of good questions, which is what a good sci-fi movie should do.  The difference between this one and the previous one in my opinion is this seemed more ambiguous and less coherent to me.  Remember though, I not seen Blade Runner in more than 10 years. I may be giving it more credit then it deserves lol.

In conclusion, i liked the movie, but if you have not seen the first then this will not make any sense.  Also if you have seen the first and are not a fan, this will not turn you into one.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Got to watch the new Captain America movie on Friday night with my good friend Abner.  I must say that it was probably the best of the Marvel movies so far.  The action was great and the story line was more along the lines of a good spy movie and less of a superhero movie.  I really suggest going to see this movie it is really good.

Captain America has never been my favorite superhero but the recent movies and The Avengers have created a new interest in me.

Comic-Con 2014 and The Lego Movie

So today has been an exciting day, even though there is a lot of work still waiting for me.  This morning passes for the greatest convention on earth finally went on sale.  I had been waiting since December when we were told they would go on sale.  They completely changed the process again, they still can’t seem to get it right, but at least it worked out for everyone I know.  I was able to get myself and my family tickets for all of the days that we wanted, my buddies were also able to get what they wanted.  Here is the thing though…  the process was full of stress and since it was impossible to know your place in line you had no idea if you even had a chance to get tickets.  It would have been better if while you were waiting you knew how close to the front of the line you were.  Otherwise it was fine I guess, maybe I am just a little upset that it has come to this.  I remember when only comic book fans and sci-fi fans went to the con, now it is full of tweens and anyone who wants to promote their new TV show.  Movies and TV take center stage and the comic artists get pushed to the back.  Do not get me wrong, the artist and soul is still there, or I would not be going, it is just cluttered with other noise now days.

Then after we got the Con situation taken care of I took the kids to see The Lego Movie,  Absolutely a great film.  Funny, and entertaining for adults and children.  Even our 4 year old loved it and has been repeating lines all day.

Wreck-it-Ralph

Well we finally went to see Wreck-it-Ralph yesterday at the discount theaters.  Wow what a suprisingly great movie.  It had lots of charm and was quite funny.  If you are an old gamer there will be some nostalgic moments, but it great even if you weren’t.  My wife who I don’t think has ever played a video game enjoyed it quite a bit, and even my Mom thought it was good.  We took both kids the 8 year old and my 3 year old daughter.  Both enjoyed it, the 3 year old didn’t even get bored

I would recomend this to anyone who is interested in a fun, cute, enjoyable movie that is good for all ages.

Looper

Well.  I just got done watching Looper, what an interesting movie.  Definitely different and unique look at time travel, or maybe not unique but for sure a different look at the way the story was told.  There were several scenes that I watched again just because the first time I missed something.  I dont want to give much away but it has some very interesting questions about change and growth.  The movie was not as action packed as I thought it would be.  There was a lot of slower scenes and some that were very hard to watch.  I would recomend this movie to anyone who is interested in a thought provoking action movie.  Those are few and hard to find and this one is a good one for sure.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Last night I went to see the first installment of The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey.  It really was every thing I was hoping for.  I am a huge fan of the book and the adaptation of The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson.  As a fan of the books it is wonderful to see someone take such care with the stories.  All to often Hollywood destroys novels, but this case Mr. Jackson takes such care with the novels and gives them the respect they deserve that they come out wonderfully, even if they are not followed exactly.  If I have any criticism it is just that the book is more lighthearted.  The movie is much more serious and dark.  I would recommend this movie to everyone, however it is not for everyone.  You have to love the genre it order to love the movie but honestly……  how could you not love fantasy…lol.

I wanted to post a quick update to this post.  I am still very happy with the move myself, but after some discussions with other fans I realized that this movie is more of a preview to Lord of the Rings as opposed to a recreation of the book.  For me, this worked, but for some who are looking for the book it may be disappointing.  Peter Jackson is creating a prequel to his Lord of the Rings movies.  This is somewhat different then the book that JRR Tolkien wrote.  The Hobbit is not so much a prequel to Lord of the Rings but instead a separate story that has some of the same characters and exists in the same world.

Prometheus…..wha???

So….  I am not sure if you saw it or not, but let me save you some time…..  wow it sucked.

I have really enjoyed Ridley Scott movies in the past, Alien, Blade Runner, and Black Hawk Down are all great movies.  Prometheus is not a good movie.  Unfortunately it was not thrilling, scary, provocative or even very entertaining.  Countless others have already commented on the most baffling aspects of the movie, which was pretty much all of it.  The motivations of the characters are a mystery and even more questions arise as the movie progresses and none, that is right none of them get answered.  i don’t care what the promotional material says, none of your questions get answered.

I must say however that the build up for the movie was great.  I loved the TED talk video Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) did, and the David the android videos.  Unfortunately the movie did not rise to the expectations.
